Who Doesn't Like Fabric Scrap Bags?

One doesn't often see fabric scrap bags in quilt shops anymore, and even quilt shops are becoming a rarity. So when I saw a fabric scrap bag listed on our local 'buy nothing' site I quickly responded.

I started sorting the bag, it was so packed of fabric, it took me hours to sort into colours / patterns. Half way through the bag I tipped it into a box. Surprising how much fabric can fit into a small bag.

There were a couple of scraps that were minky, so they went into a bag.

That was it in my sewing room this week. I got way laid when we booked a last minute cruise, (see our travel blog) and doing preparations meant that I only went downstairs once - to sort the fabric scrap bag. But what a welcome sight it was to see when walking down the stairs. Yes, I'm going to work on the fairy quilt while waiting for Bonnie Hunter's new mystery to start.

Finished Leaders and Enders Challenge 2022.

I finished last years leaders/enders quilt challenge, and I did add the extra blocks to make it look more symmetrical. Granddaughter saw it and said she wanted it for when she is watching TV, so it's hers. I even embroidered the lable with her name and she loves touching her name. She loves it.

I wasn't sure what to work on after that, so did some scrap sewing. March rainbow scrap colour was green. I started on some wonky log cabin blocks, but only managed one, but got a lot of scrappy 6.5" blocks made.

I tried a butterfly block and like it so much I made more with the scraps I had.

I also made a couple of green eggs to go with the pink one

The colour for April is purple and I have already started some wonky log cabin blocks. While scrolling Instagram I found a link to a free bunny foundation pieced block..... well I had to check that out and it was fairly easy to make. Maybe I'll make one or two for each colour of the Rainbow scrap challenge and add them to the egg scrap blocks.

As we have another cruise coming up, and cruise ships are being 'environmentally friendly' with one providing strange lolly straws and a few others providing really thin paper straws, I decided to take my own reusable straws. So I needed a 'straw' pouch to put them in. This is mark two, and I'm sure mark three will be better.

March 2023

As I look at the 'leaders/enders' challenge from last year (above), I am thinking I should add another section to the right, but then that would make it square and I really didn't want a square quilt. I'm not sure that I have enough matching scraps to add another section. Plans were to now add a colourful border then a plain dark purple outer border. Something to think about.

The fairy panel above is my next project, that will also have a purple border and I'm thinking of some pieced blocks around it.

I have spent the last few days finishing off February pink blocks that I started for Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2023.

I ended up with two 4.5" string blocks and twenty-seven scrappy blocks.

March colour is green, and I will start it today. I'm going to make a couple of Easter Egg blocks in green first.

Leader and Enders

I'm not sure who told me about leaders and enders, I just don't know. But I find them great, especially with my new sewing machine. Yes, I purchased a new machine and it is 'sew' good.

Anyway, leaders and enders. I know that way back when I was using my grandma's old Singer I used scraps to make the progression from my project to the end of the sewing, and again before I started the next day. Bonnie Hunter would suggest a leader / ender that would end up as a quilt, and I've made a few of those.... this rail post one was my first leader / ender quilt.

At present I'm using my pink scraps to make scrappy 6.5" blocks to make a quilt ..... eventually.
This week I've worked on some slow stitching on my Halloween Wall hanging. I'm hand quilting the layers. I'm liking it as I stitch on a quilting frame given to me by my Auntie and watch Netflix. I've tried to stitch one spider web a day when in my sewing room - which is 3-4 times a week.

I also repurposed a tea bag holder given to me by a dear friend some years ago. With so many projects on the go, I've decided to keep track of  12 projects and work on those until finished, then I can replace the note with a new project. Let's see how that works.

I continued to work on Moda Blockheads 4. I started to put the block into place ready to stitch together. I am using a design by Wendy Harris, who also kindly shared the measurements on the Modablockheads FB page. First two blocks I used mid and dark grey for the 3D effect .....

... but I didn't like the contrast, so unpicked the blocks and changed out one of the grey's for black and I'm much happier with that.

After a few months of 'auditioning' my beautiful hand stitched embroidery made by my Auntie was hung in the final position - over my (messy) cutting / ironing table. I love it, so special.

Off to do some more blockheads.

Messy House: Catch up #2 Nov.

Do you procrastinate? I do - all the time. I procrastinate about what fabrics to use, what sashing to do, what borders to put on, what backing, labels, quilting pattern etc etc. Some quilts are easy, like the last Sugaridoo sewalong. I had no problem with any of it - well except maybe the label, still working on that. When I am 'stuck' on these decisions, I tend to sew scraps!

I have had my Christmas fabric box out to make some more coasters so I have been using the scraps to make 6.5" and 4.5" squares, as leaders and enders. This last week I have been sewing just scraps.

About mid week I decided to sew some of the selvedge strips I have been collecting. I am making a chair cover using the selvedges, and have wanted to make a bookshelf wall hanging. This week was the week.

I love the different 'book' titles revealed in the selvedges.
Now to get ready for Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville Mystery.
