Fairy Quilt - My First Finish of the Year

Finally finished the 'fairy quilt'. My first finish for the year.

I purchased the lovely fairy panel at a quilt shop in Towoomba many, many years ago and last year when trying to think of what colours to use to make the 2025 Moda Blockheads I came across the panel and decided to make some blocks purple to go with the panel.

I made 12 blocks in total and added a strip of purple stipes to the top.

For the backing I used a Tinkerbell blanket that I purchased, also years ago, that I hadn't used yet.

Lupines and Laughter - Parts 7 & 8.

Part 7 was quick, as I already had the pieces cut out ready to go this week, which meant I could also work on part 8 and the reveal - yay. First putting together the pieces made in part 6 with some sashing.

Then piecing the alternate block to make the top.

The first border was to be ice blue, but I changed it to dark purple. The second border was the flying geese from part two.

Now all that is left to do are the cornerstones and the quilting and binding. That will have to wait as I'll be working on finishing and quilting the fairy quilt - I need all my pins that are sandwiching the fairy quilt.

Lupines and Laughter - Part 6

Part 6 was a block made up of other smaller blocks that we have made - parts 3 and 4. Some of my points were lost, and I'm ok with that.

I have also cut out the parts for part 7, so I hope to finish that this week.

Between the Lines

Finished the last row of Between the Lines sew along. It was another paper pieced block, and I'm kind of enjoying the process.

I'm really happy with result. The top is finished and all I need to do now is turn it into a quilt.

Focus/Fussy Cutting Sew Along

I thought doing my blog once a fortnight (every two weeks) would save me time. Turns out it doesn't 😊. So I'm back to weekly. This week my blog focus is the Focus Cutting Sew Along hosted by Naomi Clarke. I have this hand stitching little box that I travel with and sometimes I sew, sometimes I'm enjoying the travel. Above is block 5, c is for cherries.

Here is block 6, c is for cockatoo, matching. Matching is my least favourite block, and this year I may just miss a few. This one was van easy one.

Block 7 was D for dresses.

Three more blocks, to add to the box, to add to the quilt. Maybe I'll work on that next week at the beach.

This week was also a week for foundation piecing. I finished the April triangle blocks, and started on the second last row of Between the Lines sew along - a week for sew alongs!

What I've Been up to.

I started on the border of Old Town mystery quilt, and decided to continue to make the border by sewing it as leaders and enders. Being red, and red being the RSC of April I got my red scraps out ...
... I cut some squares for the border and some smaller squares for my squares stash box. Old Town will have to wait a bit now until I have enough of the red, and find some neutrals.

I have only been to a fabric shop once since the end of 2023, and that was because I ran out of neutrals. I've run out again, so will probably buy twice as much when I go again. It has been good using my stash though, as I really need to start to downsize.

I have been working on the Echo Triangle Quilt, slow and fiddly but I am sure it will look good when it is finished. I'm using the colours purple and teal with a black background.

I did miscount the number of pieces for the last block and had to make 4 extra blocks. However I ran out of the same purple so had to find one that matches.

I don't think it is too noticeable.

This months block was a little fiddly, and I only have two more to finish to be ready for May's block.

Well, that has been my last two weeks.

Focus Cutting Sew Along 2025

Sorry for not posting the last two weeks, we booked a last minute 2 week cruise and had a wonderful time. I did take some hand sewing but didn't have time to do any. So this post is an update for this years fussy cutting (focus-cutting) blocks, hosted by Naomi. I'm so happy that Naomi decided to do the alphabet again this year. It is so much easier to find fabric ahead of time. The shape for this year is hexagon thirds, so I had to make my own templates. I made them the same size as previous years so they will all fit on one quilt. Of course, I am behind already, these are January blocks.

Block 1 -above - is A for Australia, motif.

Block 2 - A for Australia, matching (sort of 🤣).

Block 3 - B is for bugs, motif.

Block 4 - B is for bugs, sections.

I can't promise that I will do all the matching blocks, or even all the 52 blocks but I do enjoy the process.

It Started With One Block......

It started with one block. I enjoy scrolling through quilting pages to get inspiration and sometimes a block takes my fancy. I have followed Pat Sloan on Instagram for a while and every now and then I do one of her projects. I came across the above block and thought I would make use of some 5 and a half inch squares I have been collecting. It is from Pat's Ode to National Parks sew along that started 2 weeks ago. I made one block and thought I would make a quilt out of this pattern (rather than do the National Parks quilt). My plan was to make it as a leader ender project ..... but couldn't stop sewing the blocks. I ended up making the whole lap quilt. Well that's what I think I will make from it. It's like an eye spy quilt, so for a child. Any suggestions?

I really like the way it turned out, and thinking just a thin boarder. Last week while I was writing last weeks post, my husband put up the hooks and found a rod to hang Fall Shenanigans. It is not fall (autumn) here, although today has turned cold, but Halloween falls in our spring so I'm happy to leave the wall hanging up until I make another theme replacement. Just like my Christmas wall hanging that has been hanging in our dining room for over 10 years now!

Messy House Update No. 6

I have been finishing off a few projects and started working on Moda Blockheads 5. Above is block 1 from Group 2. If you look in past blogs you will see the Christmas picnic rug and the purple blocks I made for Group 1. I am way behind on group 2, but did manage to finish block 2 this week.

I also made the green modern triangle block that I felt was needed. It does make a difference, now I need to decide the order I will place them and how to finish the top.

Rainbow Scrap Challenge colour for June is blue. Lucky I have my blues out for MBH5.

Focuscutting Sewalong 2024

I am again doing the Focus Cutting Sew Along this year, which I have done every year since it started. This year it is all about the equilateral triangle. I'm doing 2" sides to match 2022 and 2021 blocks. I'll just keep adding them around the centre until I get to the size I want. Six equilateral triangles sewn together make a hexagon. This year the themes are the alphabet, which I'm really happy about as I can source fabric before the week and keep it until needed. This is especially good as we start our travelling season, both on the seas and in our van.

Block 1 - above - is A for anchor motif. Block 2 is A for animal sections. I used a monkey fabric and fussy cut the legs.

Block 3 is B for bicycle motif

I'll be off line for the next two weeks, with only the odd Instagram photo when we have internet. You can check our travels and sewing here.

Of course I'll be taking hand stitching.
